Spartanburg– Maxine Capps Thomas, 98, of Spartanburg, went home to be with the Lord Thursday evening, June 8, 2023 at Regional Hospice House in Spartanburg.

Born in Tryon, she was the daughter of the late Ruppy Capps and Florence Metcalf Capps. Mrs. Thomas graduated from Spartanburg Memorial Hospital Nursing School and went on to work for Dr. George Dean Johnson, Sr. as a pediatric nurse for many years. Through the years, she was an avid bowler having competed in several national tournaments and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Cowpens.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, C.W. Capps, William H. Capps, Julian E. Capps; one sister, Jean Capps Jordan.

Surviving is her loving husband of 55 years, William “Bill” Thomas; one sister, Sara Capps Bishop of Spartanburg; three grandchildren, Teressa Gamble, Tony Sexton and Carroll Sexton. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 12, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Westside Baptist Church in Cowpens.

A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church with Reverend Travis Blackwell officiating.

Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus.
