Mitchell Mountaineers defeat Polk’s men

Polk County’s Jamal Wheeler poured in 30 points, but Mitchell hung on to defeat the Wolverines, 69-61, in Western Highlands Conference varsity basketball at Bakersville on Tuesday (Jan. 27).

 

With conference records becoming more important, Polk is now 5-4 in WHC competition, while Mitchell is 4-3.

 

Mitchell edged Polk, 14-12, in the first quarter, and led, 28-23, at the half. Mitchell scored 20 in the third, to Polk’s 15. In the last period, Polk shaved two points off the Mountaineer lead, but couldn’t catch up.

 

Jason Chupp added 13 points for the Wolverines; Arnie Twitty scored nine. Daniel Painter added three, and Holden Owens scored two.

 

Polk was at East Henderson on Wednesday evening, Jan. 28. Results were not available at press time. The next home game is Feb. 4, against Avery County.
