Excitement is building in Polk County as the community prepares to host the 2024 Special Olympics Spring Games at Polk County Middle School on Thursday, May 2.

This year’s theme, “Polk County Super Heroes,” promises a day filled with inspiration and camaraderie. In the spirit of the theme, attendees are invited to dress up as superheroes, adding an extra layer of fun and spirit to the event.

Athletes participating in the event are requested to gather at 9:30 a.m. for the March In, slated to begin around 9:45 a.m. The official start of the Games will follow the Opening Ceremony.

Spectators and participants can look forward to an array of snacks, pizza and beverages available for purchase at the concession stand. Any teacher planning to bring a class of students to the event is asked to contact organizer Jane Ollis to make plans for ordering pizza for the students.

Organizers encourage attendees to bring tents for added comfort and shade during the festivities. Additionally, water will be provided for all EC teachers, athletes and Unified Champions, with designated areas for bottle refills to minimize waste.

Community involvement is encouraged, with opportunities for businesses and groups to sponsor booths in the Olympic Village. Current attractions include face painting and bubbles, with organizers open to suggestions for additional entertainment such as cornhole to keep athletes engaged when not competing.

To get involved, reach out to Ollis at jollis@polkschools.org or by phone at 828-817-4404.
