POLK COUNTY—High winds throughout Polk County led to traffic issues Tuesday morning, and prompted the National Weather Service to issue a wind advisory for the area.

The county experienced 20 to 30 mph northwest winds, with gusts up to 50 mph. The wind advisory, which expired at 3 p.m., warned that “gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects, tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.” After steady rainfall throughout much of the day on Monday, the possibility of downed trees was high due to the winds and the fact that the ground was saturated.

Trees fell across Peniel Rd. near Columbus Tuesday morning, near Golden Rd., forcing traffic to be redirected. According to a social media post from the Columbus Fire Department, wires were also down in the area. The fire department announced at 10 a.m. that the road had reopened.

Additionally, Tryon Elementary School announced Tuesday morning that at least one of its buses had been delayed due to downed trees and weather.

According to Duke Power, 828 customers were without power as of 10:30 a.m., and Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation, which also services Polk County residents, said six customers were experiencing outages.
