Call received by 911 centers statewide

 

POLK COUNTY— On Monday, April 1, Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call that claimed a shooting was taking place at Polk County High School.

Upon arrival, law enforcement were able to gain entry to the school and successfully search both floors of the building, ruling out the possibility that a shooting had taken place.

A statement released to the public confirmed that the 911 call was a hoax and that at least three other counties in North Carolina had received the phone call.

According to Chief Jeff Ramsey with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the call was made around 12:08 p.m. and the caller claimed that a shooting was currently taking place in the library. In the phone call, responders could hear gunfire in the background.

Ramsey says that when police entered the school, two administrators were found in the building and were surprised after quickly being  informed of what was going on. Ramsey says they were completely unaware of the 911 call. 

A statement from Polk Polk County Emergency Management Director Bobby Arledge was released on social media reminding all citizens that are using the 911 system to use it for emergencies only.
