Mrs. Newman was born in Polk County on January 6, 1916, the daughter of the late James and Mary (Edgins) Blackwell. She was the widow of Floyd Newman and was a member of North Pacolet Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are two daughters, Guynell Shields of Spartanburg and Joyce Miller of Moore, S.C.; there are nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Newman was predeceased by two brothers, Fred and Kenneth Newman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Seawright Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Donnan Lawson officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Inman.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
