Polk softball faces Madison to claim share of conference lead

Polk County High School’s softball team, fresh off last Thursday’s 10-0 win over Hendersonville, is slated to face Madison today, Tuesday, April 8 in the Wolverines’ bid to claim a share of the Western Highlands Conference lead.

On Thursday, April 3, Polk’s Ashley Scruggs fanned eight, while yielding just one hit and issuing just one walk.

She added two hits herself, as coach Jeff Wilson’s squad cruised past the Bearcats in five innings (10-run rule).

Both Scruggs and the Wolverines sport 10-2 records. Polk is 4-1 in conference competition. Madison currently holds a one-game conference lead over Polk.

“If we can beat them,” said Polk’s head coach Jeff Wilson, “we’ll be tied for first place in the conference.”

Against Hendersonville, Brittany Jones added two hits in three at bats, while teammates Maddy Foy (a hit and a walk), Brandi Cordell (1-3, two RBI), Hayley Kropp (1-3, two RBI, walk), Carolyn Couch (1-2), Alexis McCraw (1-3, stolen base), all contributed to the win.

On Friday, April 11, the Wolverines will visit Mountain Heritage.

Friday’s game is the last scheduled game before the Wolverines go on spring break.
