First Peak Leaf Peep Oct. 23, 24

Published 2:54 pm Thursday, October 14, 2010

This time of the year brings the nip of the first frost, temperatures are dipping, days are growing shorter and the natural magic of chlorophyll and photosynthesis is tinting green leaves shades of yellow, orange and red.

Fall foliage forecasters at Western Carolina University are predicting an above average leaf show with vibrant colors this year, thanks to the record high temperatures in June and July that heat-stressed shrubs and trees.

The autumn leaf show should be hitting its peak in Blue Ridge elevations above 3,500 feet in the next few weeks and in lower areas, like most of Henderson County, by the end of the month. The tulip poplar, dogwood and sourwood trees are usually the first to turn. Blazing reds on oaks and maples follow.
