Governor McMaster announces schools closed until end of April

LANDRUM—South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced on Tuesday that all schools will be closed through the end of April because of the Coronavirus, or COVID-19. 

South Carolina joined North Carolina by extending the school closure this week. 

North Carolina schools are closed until at least May 15, with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signing an executive order to also close many businesses, including hair and nail salons. 

McMaster also announced this week that law enforcement can charge people with a misdemeanor for gathering with three or more people, excluding families and legal businesses. 

Landrum Mayor Bob Briggs announced on Tuesday that due to McMaster’s executive order, if law enforcement believes there is a reasonable emergency about health, Landrum officers will have the right to disperse gatherings. 

Briggs also announced that the Landrum Depot will be closed for all events until further notice. 

Brookwood Park will remain open to individuals but the city asks to limit interactions at the park. 

Landrum residents, along with Columbus, Saluda and Tryon residents are encouraged to pay their utility bills either online or in the drop box, with each town/city having ways to pay online and a drop box located outside each city/town hall. 

“Finally, we want to remind everyone that most of Landrum’s restaurants are offering pick-up or drive-thru services,” Briggs said on Tuesday. “Please continue to enjoy and support the city’s restaurants by patronizing them and enjoying their food in the comfort of your home.”
