Duke Energy donated two massive breakers to Isothermal Community College last week to be used in the school’s Electric Utility program.

The equipment, which will be housed in one of the training bays in the new Engineering Technology and Workforce Development Center, was delivered with the help of two cranes on Wednesday, May 1.

The large breakers, which tower above the classroom and lab are 123 Kilovolt, 2000 Amp Siemens Gas Breakers.

“This equipment will be used for education and training of our Electronics Engineering Technology Electric Utility students,” said Steve Hollifield, the lead instructor for the program. “The breakers will serve as laboratory equipment to enable students to learn breaker testing and change-out procedures including control wiring, phasing, current transformer testing, and breaker operation. We are very appreciative of our relationship with Duke Energy and our ability to prepare students for careers in the electric utility industry.”
