The Columbus Town Council voted Monday, Sept. 29 in a special called meeting to approve an amendment to the town’s 2007 Capital Improvement Plan.  Council Members Margaret Metcalf, Richard Hall and Ricky McCallister as well as Mayor Eric McIntyre were present. Councilman Joshua Denton was not present.

The town’s Capital Improvement Plan includes a list of projects for water and sewer that are slated for five-, ten- and 20-year completion dates. The resolution to amend the plan includes an addition to the ten-year project list. According to the town’s capital improvement summary, the project to be added to the list includes a water system evaluation “to identify solutions to several technical issues associated with the well and reservoir.” The project has an expected time frame of 2015-2016.

Columbus is currently in the process of applying for a $50,000 technical assistance grant that will enable a study of the well and reservoir by the engineering firm McGill & Associates. The study will involve inspections and testing of the Skyuka Road well, and the determination of a location for a second storage reservoir.

According to Interim Town Manager Timothy Barth, the firm asked the town to amend the town’s capital improvement plan to include the study so that the grant request would have a better chance to be funded.
