The Green Creek Hounds enjoyed a wonderful 2013-2014 hunting season with plenty of game and exciting hunting. During the summer when hunting is not an option, hunts turn to the show ring. Any huntsman who says they do not care about going to the shows and winning a prize is not to be believed.
Green Creek’s show season started at the Southern Hound Show in Monticello, Fla. Last year there were blue ribbons and a silver cup but 2014 brought a fourth place ribbon in the Brood Bitch with Produce.
Next was the Why Worry Hunt Puppy Show in Aiken, S.C. It was a beautiful venue at the home of Joint Masters, George and Jeannie Thomas.
Several hunts attended, including new, unregistered hunts. The unentered Crossbred Dogs won first and second with GC Onstar and Oscar. Onstar went on to be Reserve Champion Crossbred Hound.
The unentered Crossbred bitch was won by GC Ruby who went on to be Unentered Champion, Crossbred Champion and Reserve Champion of the show.
The third show was the Carolinas’ Hound Show in Camden, S.C. Thirteen hunts from the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee and Maryland attended including Bassett and Beagle packs.
The venue is the Springdale Racecourse. Events included a dinner with horn blowing, hollering and Terrier classes. The list of judges for the four rings was impressive, some travelling from as far away as Kansas.
In total, 14 ribbons were won including three Championships and one Reserve Champion.
Green Creek Bankrupt won the Entered English Dog with GC Banker placing third.
The second place went to their littermate who had been drafted to the hunt of their Sire (Why Worry Braveheart). Banker and Bankrupt returned to the ring to win the Entered Couple of English Dogs. GC Bankrupt went on to win Champion English Hound and at the end of the day competed against the winners of the American, Crossbred and Penmarydel rings.
Polk County was well represented, as Tryon Beaufort was the champion of the American ring.
When all was said and done Green Creek Bankrupt took home the title of Grand Champion and the lovely bronze trophy.
The icing on the cake was the first place Pack Class shown by Tot and Colleen Goodwin winning the fabulous Fox Head Trophy.
According to the website, the Virginia Hound Show is the largest hound show in the world. This year there were 591 hounds and 42 Hunts represented.
Seventy young people participated in the Junior Handler in various age groups.
Green Creek held their own in the Crossbred ring taking fifth in the Unentered Bitch with GC Ruby (20 entries), fourth in the Entered Bitch with GC Dawn (24 entries) and fourth in the Unentered Couple of Crossbred Dogs with Rattler and Rufus (14 entries).
In the English ring Entered English Dog was won by GC Banker with the third going to GC Bankrupt (exact opposite to the Camden show).
Again, the two littermates returned to the ring to win Entered Couple English Dogs. Their sisters were third in their class of Entered Couple of English Bitches.
At the end of the day the nod went to Blue Ridge Barnfield and Green Creek Banker was named Reserve Champion English Dog Hound.
Another exciting thing is for a hunt is to be listed on the breeding side of an exhibited hound.
Green Creek Hounds feels they owe a great deal to Live Oak Hounds, Why Worry Hounds and Fox River Valley Hunt.
They are being approached by other hunts to breed to Green Creek Banker and Bankrupt.
