On a hot July morning, Lake Adger residents enjoyed a 9-hole tournament designed to attract new golfers to the sport. Experienced golfers were paired with relatively new golfers for a little scramble competition. The setting was the newly renovated Lake Lure Golf Club.
Just in case anyone started taking their golf too seriously, course manager Dale Minick placed some life jackets, paddles and equestrian equipment on the final green, reflecting Adger residents’ love of outdoor recreation. Golfers had to putt around these “enhancements” in order to hole out. Mike Davidson 3-putted and was glad to get it. Ray Gordon and Rob Kennedy won the event with a score of one under, and Marc and Lindy Desmarais finished second at 3 over par. The efforts to reduce new golfers’ performance anxiety seemed to work, as laughter could be heard all over the course. The general consensus was, “Let’s do this again.”
