SOCCER: Wolverines check Patton for first win of season

Four different Polk County players scored Thursday as the Wolverines shut out Patton 4-0 in girls soccer action in Morganton.

Polk County (1-1-3, 1-1) picked up its first win of the season and its first Mountain Foothills 7 Conference win. Patton dropped to 3-2-1, 0-1.

Hayden Blackwell gave Polk an early lead, scoring in the seventh minute off a cross from Charley Dusenbury. Elena Carroll doubled the lead some three minutes later as she took a pass across the top of the box from Caroline Taylor and struck a low drive into the left corner of the net.

Taylor pushed the margin to 3-0 early in the second half. Her free kick deflected off a wall of defenders, and in the scramble for the loose ball, Taylor regained possession and buried a drive into the upper right corner of the goal.

Gabby Savaia then closed the scoring in the final 10 minutes, dribbling past a pair of defenders and hitting a low rolling shot from some six yards out.

Maggie McCammon returned from injury and teamed with Maggie Johnson to record the shutout in goal.

Polk County is slated to host Landrum on Monday in a non-conference matchup.
