The storm that followed the calm did not end well Thursday for Polk County.

A six-run sixth-inning rally pushed Hendersonville in front, and the Bearcats held off a late Wolverine comeback to take an 8-6 victory in Hendersonville.

Polk County dropped to 4-1 overall, 1-1 in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play. Hendersonville improved to 2-5, 1-1.

A fairly quiet first four innings ended with Hendersonville owning a 2-0 lead. That changed in the top of the fifth as Polk rallied for three runs.

Alex Perry drew a one-out walk, Cohen Edwards singled and Mark Jarrett walked to load the bases. Gunnar Alm’s sacrifice fly scored Perry before Noah Harden walked to re-load the bases. An outfield error on Lawson Carter’s liner allowed two runs to score to give the Wolverines a 3-2 lead.

Hendersonville’s Ethan Rector evened the score in the bottom of the sixth with a homer. With two outs and two runners on, a Polk County error allowed both runners to score and give the Bearcats a 5-3 edge. A hit batter preceded a three-run home run by Aiden Burlett that pushed the margin to 8-3.

Polk County, though, didn’t qo quietly. Alm singled with two outs, with Harden singling and Carter drawing a walk to load the bases. Mason Beiler drew a walk to force in one run, and Avrey Hensley lashed a double to left to score two more and cut the deficit to two.

But the Bearcats were able to get the final out to seal the win.

Hendersonville starter Ethan Milner pitched six innings, giving up just three hits and striking out eight.

Harden finished 2-for-3 for Polk County, with Hensley going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Jarrett, Edwards and Alm added base hits.

Harden pitched five innings, allowing five hits and striking out six. Carter took the loss, pitching the sixth.

Polk County returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Patton for another conference clash.
