Two homers and four runs driven in is a pretty good day for any high school baseball player.

That was just Gunnar Alm’s first inning Tuesday evening.

The Polk County sophomore matched a pair of school records and backed the solid pitching of Alex Perry as the Wolverines topped Hendersonville 13-3 in a six-inning affair at The Bottoms.

Alm added a triple in the third inning and finished the night 3-for-4 with six RBI. His two homers, his second time doing that this season, matches a school mark while his 11 total bases tied the record set in 1990 by Ty Stott.

Alm’s hitting heroics were hardly all the story of the night for the Wolverines (4-0, 1-0). Polk finished with 10 hits and drew six walks, scoring in four of the six innings.

That was more than enough for Perry, who didn’t allow an earned run while giving up five hits and striking out three in five innings. Karson Scruggs pitched a perfect sixth with two strikeouts in relief.

Alm’s first homer opened the first inning. Noah Harden and Lawson Carter each walked and Mason Beiler reached on an error to drive in Harden. Scruggs then singled to drive in Carter, and Perry was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

A walk to Cohen Edwards made it 4-0 before Matt Jarrett’s sacrifice fly plated Scruggs to make it 5-0. Alm then hammered a drive to deep right field to clear the bases and give Polk an 8-0 advantage.

Walks to Edwards and Jarrett preceded Alm’s triple in the third that upped the Wolverines’ lead to 10-1, with Harden making it 11-1 with a sacrifice fly that scored Alm. Polk then pushed across another run in the fourth as Beiler scored on Edwards’ hard-hit single down the left-field line.

Hendersonville (1-5, 0-1) made it 12-3 with a pair of two-out runs in the fifth. But Avrey Hensley doubled to open the bottom of the sixth, then scored on Perry’s single to left to end the game by run rule.

Beiler and Hensley each had two hits, with Scruggs, Perry and Edwards each adding one.

The two teams are set to meet again Friday in Hendersonville.
