Polk athletes rule the day at Wolverine Co-Ed Classic

A small field didn’t keep Polk County’s track and field teams from accomplishing some big things Thursday.

The Wolverines dominated the Wolverine Co-Ed Classic, easily topping East Rutherford and Madison to win the second meet of the season.

Polk County athletes recorded five qualifying performances for the season-ending 1A West Regional. Those efforts included:

  • The Wolverine boys 4×100-meter relay team, which finished first in 45.06.
  • Antonio Simpson, who won the 200 meters in a time of 22.88, just over a half-second off the school record of 22.20 set in 1998 by Kirk Trowell.
  • Kristopher Brooks, who cleared 10-0 to win the pole vault.
  • The girls 4×400-meter relay team, who notched a time of 4:32.68.
  • Sophia Overholt, who had a winning mark of 15-2 in the long jump.

 

Polk County will continue its early-season schedule next Friday, traveling to Montreat College for the Swain County High School Invitational.
