Lady Cardinals fall in state title game

The Landrum Lady Cardinals were defeated by the Andrew Jackson Lady Volunteers in the 2A SCHSL State Championship game on Friday, bringing their 12-game winning streak to an end.
Despite leading at the end of the first quarter 21-18, the Lady Cardinals lost 78-60 to the Lady Volunteers from Kershaw, S.C. Tamia Watkins of Andrew Jackson produced an impressive double-double of 26 points and 19 rebounds, while Ni’Yonna Asbelle added 19 points, six rebounds, and three steals to the team’s victory.
Landrum Head Coach Jared St. Charles praised his team, saying, “I’m just so proud of these girls. They just played really well this year. We put a great season together. We came up just short today, but that Andrew Jackson team is really good.”
Landrum finished ranked third in the 2A state rankings, but the championship game defeat dropped their record to 27-4. On the other hand, Andrew Jackson’s victory was their 21st in a row, also bringing their record for the year to 27-4.
Aside from the game, several players from Landrum received honors. Senior Savannah Brown and Franklin Davis were both named to the all-state team and were awarded Region Player of the Year honors. Bennett Edward, AJ Lindsey and Mario Gonzalez were also recognized with All-Region honors for the boys varsity team, while Sydney Price, Kylie Fortner and Kaylee Cortez received All-Region honors for the girls varsity.
The Landrum boys won twenty games for the fourth year in a row and were co-region champions. The Landrum girls won the Upper State Championship.
