COLUMBUS—Polk County Special Olympics is sponsoring a Polar Plunge on Friday, February 23, at The Sanctuary at Red Bell Run located at 385 Blackwood Rd. in Columbus. Participants will plunge into cold waters to raise funds for nearly 40,000 Special Olympics athletes in the state. The event promises to be an exciting and chilly experience for participants, who can join Polk County students in taking the plunge.

Individuals can register for $50 to participate in the event and receive the 2024 Polar Plunge t-shirt. Alternatively, a team of up to five members can register for $250. Participants are encouraged to fundraise above the registration fee, and every dollar raised will help support Special Olympics athletes in Polk County.

The Sanctuary at Red Bell Run, where the event will be held, is home to rescued and special needs equines. The organization strives to give each horse, mule or donkey the care that it lacked before coming to Red Bell Run.

The Polar Plunge is a unique fundraising opportunity for individuals, organizations and businesses to support Special Olympics NC.

“The fundraiser came about when one of our volunteers asked to use the venue, the swimming pool at the pavilion, for the plunge,” said Stephanie Aull, Director of Marketing. “Of course, we said yes, because it’s such a great cause, and we were all super excited to host this fundraiser.”

The event schedule includes registration at 9:30 a.m. and the plunge, lunch, and a tour of the property from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Polar Plunge will end at 1:30 p.m. Participants are advised to dress warmly and be brave enough to take the plunge.
