Landrum girls’ win propels them to first in region

 

LANDRUM—Landrum High School’s basketball teams have been on a roll lately, with both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams winning their recent games.

On Friday night, the Landrum boys held on at home in a close game versus the Chesnee Eagles (12-12. 3-5). The Eagles got within 5 points at the end of the 3rd quarter before the Cards could pull away for a 73-65 win. The Cardinals were led in scoring by senior Franklin Davis with 24 points, and sophomore AJ Lindsey with 17 points. 

Coach Lyn Smith’s team then faced the Blacksburg Wildcats (3-14, 3-4) at home on Tuesday evening. They emerged victorious in another close game, 67-60, extending their winning streak to twelve in a row and putting their overall record at 20-4, 7-0. The Cardinals were led in scoring by three players with sixteen points each: Bennett Edwards, Franklin Davis, and Colby Walker. The Cards are currently ranked #5 in the SCHSL 2A rankings. 

Meanwhile, the Landrum girls defeated the Chesnee Lady Eagles (4-20, 3-5) by an impressive 68-7 final score. The Cardinals held a 39-4 cushion at halftime and held Chesnee to only 3-points in the second half. Seniors Kaylee Cortez and Savannah Brown were the leading scorers, with 17 and 13 points each. 

They then avenged a 3-game losing streak versus the defending Region champion Blacksburg (9-10, 6-1) by a final score of 77-46. The win pushed the Lady Cards’ overall record to 19-3 and 7-1, putting them first in the region with two games remaining in the regular season. Once again, Kaylee Cortez led the way with 27 points, followed by Savannah Brown with 24 points and 22 rebounds. The Landrum girls are currently ranked #3 in the SCHSL 2A rankings.
