COLUMBUS—The Gather Community, a local organization that aims to fill gaps in youth programming, is partnering with Polk County Parks and Recreation to hold a Winter Teen Night Out event on Saturday, December 30, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Stearns Gym.

Winter Teen Night Out will be an open gym event complete with pickup basketball and volleyball. Attendees can also enjoy a hot cocoa bar, karaoke, board games and food and drinks provided by the organizers. There will also be an open mic event at the WithAll facility across the street from Stearns.

Founder of the Gather Community, Steve Martinez, said that he connected with leadership at Polk County Parks and Rec., WithAll, and Big Brothers Big Sisters to address the needs and priorities of youth in the county.

“Statistics show us that the holiday season can be a time of great celebration but it can also be a very difficult time for youth and their families,” Martinez said. “We wanted to provide a safe space for teens while they are off of school and celebrating the new year.”

The Gather Community partners with civic, non-profit, educational, athletic and faith-based communities to serve the physical and emotional needs of young people.

“We are excited to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC, WithAll Congregation, and Polk County Parks and Recreation,” said Martinez. “And all of us are happy to collectively support our young people and are blown away by the response and efforts of our community.”
