SALUDA—On Friday, December 8, from 3 to 8 p.m., Saluda Presbyterian Historical Church at 54 Carolina St. will present The Festival of the Nativities. During the event, the church will showcase nativities from around the world as part of Saluda’s Hometown Christmas.

The festival will display over forty unique nativity sets collected by parishioners from their various travels. There will also be handmade sets, including one made by a church member when they were just a child.

All of the proceeds from the Festival of the Nativities will support the church’s mission work in Guatemala to help pay for children to be educated since even elementary schooling is not free or easily accessible in Guatemala. It will be the first year the church has hosted the event.

The idea for the festival originated from the church’s pastor, Lin Johnson, after a visit to Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, SC, which had success with a similar fundraiser.

“We want the children of Guatemala to be educated so they can have a better life and fight for justice because when you are educated, you can better speak out and speak for each other,” Pastor Johnson said.

Saluda Presbyterian’s slogan is “the little church with the big heart,” and it shows in their efforts to support the town of Saluda and those in need around the globe.

“We as a church search for things that are new and no one else in the area is doing, like the festival, to draw attention to our church and its mission,” said one of the event’s organizers, parishioner Jeannie Solomon.
