TRYON—A new shop, Discount Emporium, has recently opened for business in downtown Tryon.

Located at 112 North Trade St., Suite 1, the shop is stocked with a wide array of items, including jewelry, clothing, shoes, toys and something new every day, say owners George and Sue Garrison.

Originally from New York, the Garrisons have been in the discount business for decades while living in Florida and Nevada, selling their stores right before the pandemic. They moved to North Carolina to be with Sue’s parents and soon got back into the business selling at local flea markets, but they wanted to be in a brick-and-mortar store.

“We were looking for a place to set up our business, and we really fell in love with Tryon, the people and places. We were excited to find such a good location available,” says George.

Discount Emporium, like many similar businesses, takes advantage of overstocking which occurs when large retailers purchase too much of a product and leave them with excess stock. Discount Emporium’s stock comes from some of the best stores and designers in New York and beyond, such as FAO Schwarz, Timberland, Columbia, Champion, Nike, Puma and more.

The store offers a range of discounted products, but Garrison says, ‘Blue Jeans are our specialty. We have sizes in a full range by manufacturers like Levis and Wrangler for as low as $4.50 a pair. We even got two dozen Kenneth Cole shirts in yesterday and have two left today. Our goal is to clothe a family for less since times are tough right now.”

They carry larger sizes of women’s clothing and men’s T-shirts in 3X and 4X sizes. Sue personally handles a lot of the clothing and jewelry.

“What’s here today might be gone tomorrow because everything sells so fast,” says Sue. “We try to have something for everyone.”

They offer products for the home, as well as clothing for ladies, men, and children. There will also be a selection of footwear, baby items, pet merchandise, and accessories. They have great gifts for all ages, with video games for Xbox and PS5, board games and DVDs all priced to sell.

“You can tell I really love what I do,” adds George. “We are looking forward to meeting the folks in the area. And we want them to know at Discount Emporium, we keep prices down and will continue to do so.”
