Outdoor breakfast raises funds for local scholarships

 

TRYON—The Kiwanis Club of Tryon, together with Key Club members from Polk County High School and Polk County Early College, held its Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at Harmon Field on Saturday morning. 

The outdoor breakfast, which ran from 8 to 11 a.m., featured home-baked apples, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, and, of course, fluffy pancakes. 

“The Pancake Breakfast raises money for scholarships for Polk County High School and Early College students,” says Sharon Millard, Secretary and Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Tryon. 

Over two dozen Kiwanis members volunteered, along with ten Key Club members from both schools. Each year, the Kiwanis Club gives $4,000–$5,000 in college scholarships to Key Club members. 

“I joined because I really wanted to help other people in the community,” says Polk County Early College junior Dominic Cruz-Painter, a member of the Key Club who volunteered at the breakfast. Other volunteers from the high schools shared similar sentiments, saying that they enjoyed volunteering and wanted to get more involved in their community. 

Another opportunity for members of the community to contribute to the Kiwanis scholarships is the Kiwanis Kupboard. 

“The Kiwanis Kupboard began as a table at Landrum Antique Mall,” Kiwanis of Tryon President Linda Greensfelder says. “Members would donate items they’d bought for their kids that were too nice to throw away, and it has grown from there. We’re always looking for donations of items for the Kupboard from the community.” 

The Pancake Breakfast is held twice each year. The Kiwanis Club of Tryon meets on Wednesdays at noon at the Congregational Church in Tryon, and visitors are always welcome.
