Landrum – The Landrum Cardinals Varsity put on a record-breaking show in front of the home crowd Friday night, defeating the Blue Ridge Fighting Tigers (0-6) by a score of 74-34 to bring their record to 4-1 on the season.

The Cards started quickly with a kickoff return for a touchdown from Junior Aj Medvar. Kicker Joey Martinez would knock in the extra point to give them a 7-0 lead. From there, the scoring would come fast and furious in the first quarter, with Blue Ridge scoring on the next possession to make it 6-7. Landrum would stop the fake extra point and go on a roll from there. A 33-yard Colton Link run would set up a touchdown pass from Quarterback Titus Poore to Aj Medvar to give them a 14-6 lead.

The Landrum defense would then get in on the action with a fumble recovery, setting up a Titus Poore scrambling touchdown run out of a broken play. A missed extra point would make it 20-6. The Cardinals would add a Colton Link 63-yard touchdown run and a Hayden Martindale touchdown reception from Titus Poore to build a 34-6 Landrum lead. A Blue Ridge 1-yard touchdown run would be followed by another Colton Link touchdown run that along with a  Jayden Van Wettering sack, would shut down Blue Ridge’s end-of-half drive and any comeback hopes, cementing the Card’s 40-13 halftime lead.

The Colton Link highlights would continue into the second half with a 3-yard and 91-yard touchdown run, making it 54-13. Blue Ridge would score a pair of touchdowns, only for Link to add another to make it 61-27 as the 3rd quarter ended. Link would score again, followed by Sammie Smith in the fourth to break the Landrum single-game scoring record of 62 set last year at Blacksburg with a 74-34 final.

Coach Brent Bridges said in postgame comments when asked about the record-breaking performance, “We played well and kept our composure. The kids put up the 74-points on the board, not the coaches.”

The Cardinals will now shift their focus to region play as they prepare to take on Chesnee next Friday night on the road. The game is set to kick off at 7:30 pm, with clear skies and a temperature in the mid-60s expected.
