The Landrum Cardinals (1-1) suffered a tough loss in their first road game of the season against the St. Joseph’s Knights (3-0) on Friday night.
The final score was 34-6.
On an early offensive possession, Cardinal kicker Joey Martinez’s first field goal attempt of the season was blocked. St. Joseph’s capitalized on the opportunity and several other Landrum miscues to build an early 14-0 first-quarter lead thanks to a solid running game led by Brayden Johnson. Johnson finished the night with an impressive 114 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries.
Landrum was able to get on the board in the first quarter with a Reese Dunaway catch from starting quarterback Titus Poore with 2:46 to go. However, the Cardinals would go into halftime trailing 24-6 despite moving the ball consistently against the Knights’ defense.
The Landrum defense stepped up in the second half, holding St. Joe’s to only a single touchdown. Although the Cardinals had several excellent returns on special teams from junior wide receiver AJ Medvar and a Domanic Whitesides fumble recovery, they were unable to put any points on the board themselves.
“This one falls on me. We came into the game flat, and we’ll be going back to work on Monday,” said Coach Brent Bridges.
The Cardinals will look to bounce back Friday night as they host Polk County (1-2) at Cardinal Stadium at 7:30 pm.
