Andy Haynes marks 50th year practicing law at weekend event

TRYON—Celebrating half a century in one’s chosen profession is a rare feat. This made Saturday night’s dinner in honor of Tryon’s R. Anderson “Andy” Haynes, marking his 50th year as an attorney, an exceptionally special occasion.

The event, held at the Sunnydale in Tryon, was attended by family, friends and colleagues who came to congratulate Haynes and celebrate his induction into the North Carolina Bar Association’s Legal Practice Hall of Fame. On behalf of the Polk County Bar Association, Phil Fagan presented Haynes with a plaque in recognition of his achievements.

A native of Tryon, Haynes graduated from St. Andrew’s School in Delaware and received his B.A. in history from Trinity College in Connecticut. He then obtained his Juris Doctor degree from UNC in 1973, and began his law practice, concentrating on real estate and estate planning, when he returned home.

Throughout his career, Haynes has been a prominent figure in the community, often involved in charitable and cultural events in the area, and his family’s connection with Tryon dates back 135 years.

Haynes attributes his success to his dedicated staff. Leading the team is Catherine Wall with an impressive 47 years at the firm, followed by Joanie Fisher and Sherrie Campbell, each with 28 years of service, and Gay Patton, who has been part of the team for a decade.

“I’ve been blessed to be able to come back home and practice law,” Haynes said. “The people I grew up with are great people, and the people that have moved here from other places are a great addition to the community.”

Haynes fondly recalls his first client, Ernest Bayne, the longtime caretaker of a family business. He crafted Bayne’s will for a mere dollar – the first dollar he earned as a lawyer, which he still has to this day.

“It’s a momentous occasion to do anything for 50 years, and we’re all in awe of that achievement,” said Haynes’ son, Morgan. “It’s a testament to his devotion and commitment to the community.”

R. Anderson Haynes Law Firm, located at 78 Pacolet St. in Tryon, continues to provide services in estate planning, real estate and more.
