TRYON—Artist HP Bloomer will teach a two-day glazing workshop at the Tryon Arts & Crafts School on August 4 and 5.

Bloomer, who grew up in the Art Center of Waco art studio and pursued a master’s degree in ceramics in 2008, will focus on creating exciting surfaces and finishes through glaze consideration, different glaze applications and mark-making techniques.

Bloomer discovered TACS through a friend and has been teaching ceramics for several years, and says the workshop is an opportunity to step beyond the “one dunk and done mentality of glazing” and consider a broader spectrum of the glazing world.

Students will learn about masking techniques, brushwork and glaze application. The workshop is geared towards intermediate-level students or those with beginning-level glaze instruction.

“I helped load my first kiln when I was around the age of 8,” Bloomer says about his start in ceramics. “I initially went to college at the University of North Texas for painting and drawing but found myself in the ceramics program after a while. The reliability and reward of creating functional objects appealed to me, and I then pursued my Masters in ceramics.”

Bloomer’s favorite part of teaching is seeing students take a tidbit of information and run with it, creating something new and unique.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days, costing $205 for members and $235 for non-members, with materials included. Students are asked to bring sumi brushes, cheap chip brushes and 6-10 smooth-surfaced bisque-fired cylinders. For more information visit tryonartsandccraft.org.
