TRYON— Tryon Arts & Crafts is hosting a two-day Glass Mosaics workshop on July 22 and 23. The workshop will be led by instructor Wendy West, who has over 30 years of experience in glass art.

During the intensive workshop, students will learn techniques and safety measures in creating glass mosaics for interior decor. West will also facilitate the connection between imagination and the desire to learn about glass into a unique experience whose end product is glass art.

“My favorite part of teaching is watching my students grow and gain confidence in their own ‘art voice,” West said. “I do not seek to have anyone copy me but help each individual find their own expression.”

West has been creating art since she was six years old. She began as a painter, then a pastel artist, and finally fell in love with glass over 30 years ago. She owned a professional art glass studio in Jacksonville Beach, FL and taught Art K-12 in public schools and Adult Art at the college and National workshop level. She holds two college degrees in Art.

The glass mosaics workshop at Tryon Arts & Crafts is open to both members and non-members. The workshop fee is $225 for members and $255 for non-members, with the materials fee yet to be determined.

“Glass is amazing.” West said. “Unlike a painting, the colors change with sunlight all day. It’s exciting to learn how to manipulate it, hot or cold. Because there are different processes, a student learns some science and some math, but mostly about what’s beautiful. Art is a universal language that transcends time and culture. It’s humbling and exhilarating all at once. No experience necessary, just a desire to learn and a courageous spirit.”
