Landrum varsity basketball teams continue their winning ways

LANDRUM–The Landrum boys and girls varsity basketball teams kept their win streaks going with another undefeated weak versus Region rivals Liberty and Chesnee. 

 

Tuesday night on their home court, the Landrum Cardinals (20-3, 7-0) opened the week with an 80-59 blowout of the Liberty Red Devils (1-19, 0-7). Landrum was again led in scoring by the current favorite for Region 1 AA Player of the Year Junior Franklin Davis, who scored twenty-six points on 8 of 16 shooting and 6 of 7 from the foul line. Sophomore Bennett Edwards produced an impressive stat line of sixteen points, eight assists, and seven rebounds, with Mario Gonzales and Marc Gonzales adding ten and twelve points in the runaway victory.

They would follow it up Friday night with a 68-55 road win versus Chesnee Eagles (6-17, 1-6) to push their winning streak to eight consecutive games. The Cardinals trailed at the end of the first quarter 18-11 but would bounce back to take a 33-29 halftime lead. They outscored the Eagles 35-26 in the second half to finish off the win. The Cardinal Boys are currently ranked #11 in the Upstate Overall Rankings and #8 in the South Carolina 2A rankings. 

 

The Landrum Lady Cardinals (15-5, 6-1) put on an impressive defensive performance at home against the Liberty Lady Red Devils (4-16, 2-5), holding their opponent to only six first-half points on their way to 59-25 victory. Junior Savannah Brown would have a big game with eighteen points, seven assists, and nine rebounds. Freshman Kylie Fortner’s nineteen points would lead the Lady Cards in scoring, with Junior Kaylee Cortez throwing in seventeen. 

 

The Lady Cards won their fourth conference game on the road with a 57-16 romp versus the Chesnee Lady Eagles (5-16, 1-6). Once again, Brown would put up an impressive stat line with thirteen points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Cortez led them in scoring with fifteen, and Fortner added eleven points. 

 

The Landrum varsity teams have a busy week ahead as they begin their final three-game stretch of the regular season. They travel to Blacksburg on Tuesday, January 31, with the girl’s game starting at 6 p.m. with the boy’s game afterward. They return home on Friday, February 3, for games against Greenville Tech Charter starting at 6 p.m.
