Steps to HOPE has partnered with Lake Lure Classical Academy to create an art display for the month of  October. This month is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Every year we use October to bring  awareness to this epidemic that resides in every neighborhood on Earth. This year we wanted to take  this opportunity to turn a spotlight onto the hidden or silent victims of domestic violence, CHILDREN.

Each display case will house a piece of art created by a child in this community. Students were asked to  create something that showed what their “safe place” was. Their safe place could be anywhere! A  physical place or somewhere they could go inside of their mind that gave them a sense of peace and  made them feel safe.

When you think about domestic violence occurring, more often than not you are thinking about two  adults who are involved in this situation. Children can become an afterthought when in a crisis situation  that by definition is committed between people who are in an intimate relationship. We need to take off  our blinders and see that child hiding in a closet, running outside to get away from the yelling, or asking  a friend to spend the weekend at their house to get away from the nightmare weekends on their own.
