Polk County held its own with defending state champion Union Academy for much of Saturday’s state quarterfinal, with the Cardinals eventually taking a 2-0 victory on a steamy evening in Monroe.

Union improved to 21-0 and will look to return to the state championship in Tuesday’s West Regional final, hosting Mountain Island Charter.

Polk County, making its deepest playoff run in 10 years, ended its season with a 13-5-2 record.

Kelsey Havican and Mia Fraticelli had the goals for Union Academy, which took the upper hand in a defensive struggle late in the first half.

The score stayed at 1-0 until the final minute, when Union Academy followed a delay of game penalty with a goal just before time ran out.
