Landrum men outscore another talented team

Landrum’s men’s varsity basketball squad constantly runs into opponents who exhibit excellent ball-handling skills, but whom the Cardinals nearly always outscore.

That was the case on Thursday, Dec. 7, when the Cardinals hosted non-conference Woodruff, and defeated the Wolverines, 64-51, to rise to 4-0. Friday’s scheduled game against Blue Ridge, at Landrum, was switched to Dec. 18 due to the weather.

It didn’t hurt that the Cardinals shot well themselves, and also rebounded effectively. Landrum’s unrelenting defense has also kept slick-handling opponents out of the hoop.

On Thursday, Woodruff took a 2-0 lead, but the Cardinals quickly established their dominance, going up by 9-3, and never looking back. Even two successive Woodruff three-pointers merely reduced Landrum’s lead to 36-23.

Foster Bridges led the Cardinal scoring with 22 points, followed by Trey Smith (12) and Manny Gonzalez (11). Smith’s three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Cards a 49-32 lead after three quarters.

On Thursday, Dec. 14, the Cardinals visit Blue Ridge. On Friday, Dec. 15, they host cross-state rival Polk County.
