LHS posts cross-country state meet results

Landrum’s Alexus Atkins was named to the All-State AA cross-country team, after finishing 15th overall at the a/2A state meet in Columbia on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Atkins (21:05.00) and teammates Marley Dickson (19th overall, 21:29.00) and Grace Valentine (20th overall, 21:37) helped the Cardinal women place fourth among 17 A/2A teams (116 runners) at the meet.

In men’s competition, Sam Blackwell (29th overall, 18:15), Silas Phillips (32nd overall, 18:20.00) and Andrew Scruggs (32nd overall, 18:40) helped the Cardinals place seventh overall. Seventeen teams, and 113 runners competed in the 2A competition.

According to Landrum head coach Brett Morley, it could have been even better.

“We had a very rough day as a program,” Morley noted. “I believe the heat, mixed with nerves, got the best of our boys’ team. The girls ran hard, despite our number-two girl passing out just after 2.5 miles. It was tough, but we will learn and move on to our next season with our heads held high!”
