Golf team visits columbus caddy maker

A memorable season ended with a memorable day for Polk County’s boys golf team.

The Wolverines recently celebrated a 2017 season in which the team won a match, had a medalist in a match, had two All-Western Highlands Conference players (Dillon Overholt and Gabe O’Brien), qualified for the 2A West Regional and placed 10th in that regional.

The team began its day of celebration by visiting Kangaroo Products in Columbus. The visit offered the team an opportunity to learn more about the local business that makes motorcaddies for golfers. Kangaroo specializes in quality remote (and non-remote) caddies with parts made or sourced from the United States, mostly in the Carolinas.

Students toured in three groups and learned about how the caddies easily assemble and disassemble and maneuver around by receiver commands. The players also toured the factory and saw the machines and people behind the making of the different components. The company president, Mike McCue, then displayed Kangaroo’s newly redesigned website and videos and answered questions.

McCue also quizzed the team on some general golf knowledge.

“The visit was interesting and hopefully helped my golfers realize that there are golf-related job opportunities for their future consideration that doesn’t involve becoming a professional golfer,” said Polk County golf coach Pat McCool.

After the visit, the team moved to Tryon Country Club for nine holes of Captain’s Choice golf with family members and friends. Pat and Dillon Overholt, along with Henry and Jaylon Bontrager, earned first place with a 5-under par showing.

Tied for second were Chris and Landon White and Carl Campbell and Tyler Philpott. Also in the second place tie were Marty and Josh Chupp with the O’Brien Clan.
