PCHS to offer summer speed, strength program for female athletes

Published 5:27 pm Thursday, June 8, 2017

Polk County High School will offer a summer speed and strength program, Lady Wolverine Summer Speed and Strength Training, for female athletes in grades 8-12.

In order to participate, athletes must have a current physical and concussion form on file. This program is not specific to one sport but is geared toward increasing female athletes’ speed, strength, quickness, agility and flexibility. Besides improving athleticism, this program is also helpful for injury prevention. Head softball coach and assistant head football coach Jamie Thompson will lead the program.

The weight-training portion will focus on key lifts such as squats and power cleans and will also include auxiliary lifts to strength stabilizer muscles that support specific joints of the body. Speed drills will be directed at teaching correct running form and maximizing straight line speed and change of direction. Quickness drills will increase athletes’ overall foot speed and mobility.
