Cardinals’ Pierce, Bravo, Zimmerman earn state place honors in wrestling

Landrum’s Wrenn Pierce, Ismael Bravo and Paul Zimmerman capped their outstanding wrestling seasons as place-winners in the state AA individual tournament last weekend at Anderson, S.C.

 Pierce finished the season as state runner-up at 138 pounds; Bravo as state runner-up at heavyweight (285) and Paul Zimmerman at fourth in the 195-pound class.

In his quarterfinal bout, Pierce pinned Eli Beall of Academic Magnet. Advancing to the semi-finals, Pierce defeated Tyrese Williams of Cheraw, 8-3. In the finals for the second year in a row, Pierce lost a heartbreaking 4-3 bout to Hunter Haven of Andrew Jackson.

 Bravo won his quarter-final match by pinning Marion’s Craig Legette and then topped Cheraw’s Nick Dozier, 12-4, in the semi-final round. In the finals, Bravo lost by pin to Javonta Ross of Barnwell.

After pinning Kenneth Robinson of St. John’s in the quarter-finals, Zimmerman lost by fall to Kohl Gagum of Bamberg-Ehrhardt in the semi-finals. Gagum finished as state runner-up.
