Cardinal men end hoop season at Greenville Tech

Every fine season ends some time, and for Landrum’s men, their basketball season ended with a frustrating 59-57 loss on the road to Greenville Tech Charter in Saturday’s second round of state AA playoffs.

On the positive side, the Cardinals Trey Smith and Foster Bridges were named Region 1 2A Co-Players of the Year. Smith, Bridges and Turner Ussery are the three Cardinals on the All-Region team.

In addition, Smith and Bridges were named to the SCBCA All-State team.

Though the Cardinal led Saturday’s game, 14-9 after the first quarter, the Warriors outscored the visitors, 18-16, and 21-13, in the second and third quarters. Landrum edged the Warriors in the final period, 14-11.

Bridges led the Cardinals with 18 points, adding a pair of blocked shots. Smith scored 13, with five assists and three steals. Ussery scored 10. Manny Gonzalez grabbed 11 rebounds, and scored nine.

The Cardinals finished the season with a 20-7 mark.
