Landrum men split in first week of region basketball

A mixed week on the road saw Landrum upend Chesnee, 81-64, on Jan. 10, but fall to St. Joseph’s Catholic, 76-49, in men’s varsity region basketball.

 The Cardinals, now 10-5 overall and 1-1 in region play, host Christ Church Episcopal this Tuesday evening at 7:30, and Greer Middle College on Friday, Jan. 20, also at 7:30.

 Against Chesnee, the Cardinals outscored the Eagles in each of the first three quarters, dominating the game with a 27-13 third period. The Eagles scored eight more in the final period, after the Cardinals had established a 61-36 lead.

Landrum’s Trey Smith led all scorers with 23 points, adding five assists and picking four steals. Teammate Foster Bridges scored 19, and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Turner Ussery (12 points, five assists and four steals), Skylar Ussery (nine points), Easton Jenkins (nine points) and Manny Gonzalez (14 rebounds) all paved the way over the Eagles.

 Smith’s efforts helped him earn the Tip Top Club’s Player of the Week Award. Cardinal coach Lyn Smith was named as assistant coach for the North team in the North-South All-Star game, to be played in March.
