After the intra-squad Midnight Madness late last week, Polk County football players finally got to hit opposing players when they hosted East Rutherford in a pre-season scrimmage at Columbus on Wednesday evening, Aug. 10.

The Wolverines scored four times in action where each team ran 30 plays until a rain shower rendered the field less than safe, and play was halted. The Cavaliers managed to score three times, as each team began play from its own 40-yard line.

Polk scored twice on one possession, moving the ball efficiently.

“We did some good things tonight,” remarked Wolverine head coach Jamie Thompson.

Though the Wolverines got to hit opposing players, Polk didn’t tackle well, Thompson admitted. Even so, Polk defenders stopped a number of opposing runners nearly at the line. East managed a few big plays.

In action designed to give lots of players opportunities, and to smooth out wrinkles, everybody got an opportunity, according to Thompson. The sudden end to what was set to be a longer session irked Thompson.

New plays earned Thompson’s approval.

“I was pleased with the new stuff we were doing,” he said, adding that he was also pleased with his new quarterback, Dillon Overholt. “He did some really good things tonight. I was pleased with his play tonight.”

Thompson also liked the play of Storm Wheeler, who, among other accomplishments, hauled in one of Overholt’s passes for a long gain.

“We’ve got some weapons,” Thompson remarked. “At the same time,” he admitted, “we’ve got things to work on.”

Polk opens its 2016 season at Chase next Friday, Aug. 19, with a 7:30 scheduled start. First home game is Aug. 26, when the North Henderson Knights visit Columbus. Opening kickoff is also set for 7:30.
