This year the men of Red Fox were represented at the North Carolina USTA Tennis League Championships. Previously the Lady Foxes have twice made the trip to the big dance, but this was the first trip for the men who competed in Greensboro, N.C. at various area venues over the May 20-23 weekend.

Matches followed a Round Robin format with the winner of each pool advancing to the finals. Sixteen teams from across the state were vying for the title. Competing in the men’s 65+ 3.5(NTRP) division and winning the local league with a 5 win and 1 lost season, the team earned a bid for state.

Director of Tennis at Red Fox, Jim Greene, who formed the team stated, “These guys are a true representation of the tremendous pool of talent we have here within our area. I feel sure they will compete well and I wish them all the best at their run for championships. I am very proud of the efforts and dedication they have put forth this season.”

The team was captained by Bill Pomeroy, a long time league organizer and participant. They have been very successful under his guidance and organizational support.

Remaining team members were Doug Dacey, Vernon Leister, Mike McCarthy, Russ Rock, Bill Smith, Bob Then, Bob Tobey and Larry Wendling. For some of the players this was their first league play experience — quite an accomplishment for a group playing together for the first time.

Summer leagues are forming up soon! All are encouraged to become part of the game. Please contact Jim Greene at 864-404-1867 for your chance to get in the game.
