Down 2-0 coming into the home seventh, Polk County roared back to tie its third-round state playoff game against visiting Franklin on Tuesday, May 19, but Franklin prevailed in extra innings, winning, 4-2, and ending an outstanding (21-4 overall) season for the Lady Wolverines. Defense, one of Polk’s major assets during the season, helped keep Franklin at bay on Tuesday also.

In the top of the sixth with one out and runners on second and third, a Franklin batter sent a fly ball to fairly deep center field. Polk’s Alexis McCraw made a good catch, then fired a strike to catcher Ashley Kropp, who is shown making the tag, on an inning-ending double play, to hold Franklin’s lead at 2-0. Maranda Gosnell’s two-run seventh-inning double tied the game, but Franklin won in the eighth inning. Ashley Scruggs pitched a complete game for the the Wolverines.
“I’m proud of the girls,” remarked Polk head coach Jeff Wilson. They gave everything they had. I’m proud of everything they did this season.”
