When Landrum’s football team travels to Walhalla for Friday evening’s game, the Cardinals will face a different type of offense.
Landrum head coach Jason Farmer said the Razorbacks feature a “scrum offense.” If that sounds like rugby, Farmer observed that it looks more like rugby to him. Walhalla lines up with two tight ends, two wings and a running back.
“They run right at you,” said Farmer, who expressed some concern because of some large Razorback players. “We’re going to have our hands full,” he said, “because we’re not big.” But, Farmer’s mantra for his players this year, of “stronger and faster” should be a factor.
The Cardinals won their opener last week (making Farmer 1-0 as Cardinals’ coach) against Travelers Rest, while Walhalla lost its opener. “It always feels good to be 1-0,” said Farmer. And while Landrum is ranked a bit higher in South Carolina, “I’m sure they (Walhalla) want to win their first one as much as we want to win our second one,” he cautioned.
Walhalla is northwest of Clemson, about a two-hour bus ride from Landrum. If the Cardinals win, the ride back home will feel shorter.
