Landrum High School’s Daniel Perry and Gavin Bishop will display their respective athletic talents in college, after they signed their intent Monday to play at that higher level.
Bishop, a star catcher/outfielder for the Cardinals, will attend University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, a junior college, on a baseball scholarship.
How does he feel about the chance to play this sport beyond the high-school level?
“It’s a great thing,” he remarked. “I get to go to school and explore college baseball life as well. It’s a great feeling that another level (of) school is interested in me.”
Bishop has not yet decided on a major, but is content to ”just take it one step at a time.”
Classmate Perry, who signed with University of South Carolina Upstate on a soccer scholarship, scored 14 goals and added twenty assists for the Cardinals during the recent season. He plans to study biology and might transfer to the Medical University of South Carolina. I’ve always wanted to play soccer,” Perry said. “I think the school (USC Upstate) is an excellent school.” In high school, Perry played forward and midfield but expects to play backfield in college. He won’t be the first in his family to play college soccer; brother Jon currently plays for Presbyterian College.
What does Jon feel about his brother’s “promotion”? “It’s awesome, Jon Perry replied. “We started together, playing (soccer) in the back yard. “This is our goal. We finally made it.”
