Polk County plated three runs in the second, four in the fourth and added two in the sixth to defeat Erwin 9-8 in varsity baseball on Thursday, March 27.

The Wolverines’ fourth consecutive win moved them to 5-5 overall.
The (non-conference) win felt especially good to head coach Ty Stott, who didn’t like the way some of the Erwin players acted in their early-season win over Polk.
“That’s why I like to play the old-fashion way,” Stott said, with each team playing the other twice. He said wh

ichever team wins the first contest, the other will play hard to win the second.
Polk batters combined for 11 hits, while Erwin committed five errors to the Wolverines’ one.
Morgan Groves got the start pitching for the Wolverines and went two and two-thirds innings, before giving way to J.D. Edwards.
All Edwards did was pitch the final four and a third for the win, inducing plenty of grounders, two of which resulted in inning-ending double plays in the fifth and sixth innings. He also contributed three hits.
“He pitched really, really good,” Stott said of Edwards. “The fielders are on their toes, knowing he’s throwing strikes. He can definitely eat up innings. He’s showing he can do a lot of things for us.”
Erwin’s earlier win was not the only factor for Polk to overcome.
“It was terrible weather,” Stott said. “The wind was blowing like crazy.”
