Neither snow, nor school closings, could keep Polk County High School’s basketball teams out of action forever, and when the women’s team finally caught up with Hendersonville, on Friday, Feb. 14, the Wolverines earned a 52-30 win on the Bearcats’ court.

Polk (11-9 overall, and 5-6 in conference play) led 30-11 at the half, and then wore down the Bearcats. The Wolverines came out running in the second half, with Hayley Kropp taking advantage of a steal, and racing to the hoop to give Polk a 32-11 advantage.

Kropp scored 16, adding seven assists and five steals. Sarah Phipps scored 8 points, and pulled down 13 rebounds, while Savannah Ross netted 11 points. Lyric Flood (5 points), Janada Carson (5 points), Ashley Love (4 points) and India Godlock (3 points) rounded out Polk’s scoring.

It didn’t hurt that Hendersonville players missed many long two-and three-point shot attempts, often tossing the ball up the instant they received it.

Polk’s win came exactly a week after the Wolverines trounced Owen, and figured to play three games last week. That was before the snowstorm kept them out of action for a week.

“It was a good win that was the first time we been together since Friday, Feb. 7 because of all the bad weather,” said Wolverine coach Craig Culbreth. “So, we didn’t know how well we would play.”

The Wolverines were slated to play Owen at Black Mountain last night. The score was not available at press time.
