Woodruff scored early and often, on Friday Oct. 23, to defeat Landrum, 55-0, in conference football.

The Cardinals know that Woodruff has one of the best teams in the area, and learned why, as the Wolverines’ quarterback Keegan Halloran both ran the ball well, and was able to hit his receivers.

The Cardinals, now 3-7 overall, and 1-5 in the region, were unable to move the ball consistently on the ground or in the air, while Woodruff used the air game consistently to pull away. Woodruff advanced to 8-1 and 6-0, respectively.

The Wolverines were able to contain Anthony Anderson and his running mates, and all also contain Landrum’s passing game. Starting quarterback Peyton Kemmerlin was hurt during the game, and had to leave.

After Woodruff scored its final touchdown, the Wolverines lined up for the extra point kick, as they had on each previous occasion, but faked the kick. Landrum’s defense smothered the play, and kept their visitors from adding to their total.

Dropped snaps and handoffs hurt the Cardinals, as did Woodruff’s withering attack. Landrum also came up short on a fairly long field goal attempt.

“We’ve got to figure out how to beat teams like this,” Cardinal head coach Jason Farmer told his players after the game. Farmer reminded his players that this is the same Landrum team that earlier this season defeated Walhalla and “a very good Polk County team.”

“We’re going to build this into a championship program,” Farmer promised his players. “You have to keep fighting,” was his admonition to them.

This Friday, Oct. 30, the Cardinals visit Pendleton’s Bulldogs, another tough conference rival. Opening kickoff is set for 7:30.
