This evening, when the Polk County varsity football team hosts Mitchell, opening kickoff will be at 7 p.m., not 7:30.

Don’t be surprised to see television cameras around the field as Fox 40 (My 40) TV will perform the first TV coverage of a high school football game in Western North Carolina.

On the field, the Mountaineers bring a 6-0 overall mark, and are 1-0 in Western Highlands Conference action. Mitchell can put points on the board, so far scoring at least 40 points per game. Last week’s 42-20 win over WHC rival Owen was the Mountaineers closest game of the season.

On the other hand, the Wolverines (3-4 and 1-1) will be hungry for a win, after coming off a disappointing 26-25 loss last Friday to Mountain Heritage at North Buncombe.

Khiree Green, Jaymes Wingo and Shakur Wingo are all running the ball well, and are improving each game. Quarterback Jamal Wheeler has been on a scoring tear, and has good receivers. The versatile Storm Wheeler is at full strength. Count on Polk’s running and pass defenses to be up to the challenge.
