Landrum High School senior Sam Robinson loves to run and jump, and he’s good enough at it to have just received a nearly full track scholarship to Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.
Ranked number one among South Carolina AA athletes in the 110 hurdles and second in that category in the 400 hurdles, Robinson is just what Wofford’s head track coach Johnny Bomar was looking for.
Bomar, a one-time star hurdler at Western North Carolina University has been without a star hurdler at Wofford for some time and says he can’t wait to work with and benefit from Robinson.
“He (Bomar) is ready to have a hurdler on the team,” said Robinson, who on May 1, signed his intent to compete in track at Wofford.
Already accepted at Wofford, where he plans to study biology and environmental science (“It’s definitely the best school for it,” said Robinson), he was visiting the campus when Bomar spotted him. Robinson was not an unknown in the coach’s world, and Bomar informed the youth that he wanted him to compete for him at Wofford.
For Robinson, this might be a perfect match.
“I love track,” said Robinson. “I couldn’t see myself being done with it. I’m excited, and hope to get a lot better.”
Robinson’s step-dad, Kevin Vest said Sam has sharpened his focus on track.
“He really enjoys it. He pretty much quit baseball and football to compete in this,” Kevin Vest said.
At Landrum, Robinson has also competed in the 4×100-meter sprint and high jump. He is part of the quartet that recently broke a previous Cardinal record in the 4×100, as Robinson ran the first leg.
Biology and environmental science might be a perfect match for Robinson as well.
“I love being outdoors,” he said, noting his passion for hiking and mountain biking.
