Columbus Lions learn Polk County history

Anna Pack Conner

Anna Pack Conner

Anna Pack Conner was the guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Columbus Lions Club. She presented a greatly condensed version of her upcoming class at Isothermal Community College about the history of Polk County.

She began with the first settlements along the coast of Virginia, North and South Carolina, continued with the formation of Polk County, and concluded by identifying eleven generations of her family who lived, or are still living, in Polk County.

The Lions are the world’s largest volunteer service organization. The Columbus Club tries to live up to the Lions’ motto, “We Serve,” by providing eye exams and eyeglasses for those who cannot afford them, recycling used eyeglasses, sending a visually impaired person (VIP) to Camp Dogwood for a week of “vacation” on Lake Norman, and another VIP to a fishing tournament at the Outer Banks each year. The Club also visits local VIPs with gift bags at Christmas time and again for their birthday.

Columbus Lions meet on first and third Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. at Calvert’s Kitchen in Columbus. For more information call President Helen Trevathan at 894-7062.
